The first 2 alarm fire in the City of Schenectady in 2017. Call came in at 1345 about multiple calls of a structure fire in the area of Gerling, Van Vranken, and Florence streets. Leaving station one, Deputy Chief Gerfin saw smoke from the apron and called a 2nd alarm. There were also conflicting reports of people re entering the building to get belongings and pets. Water supply was a problem with temperatures in the upper teens hydrants were frozen and alternatives had to be located meaning longer stretches of supply lines. Lt. Brian Demerest of Truck 1 informed DC Gerfin to have manpower pull out of the building and with air horns sounding operations turned to defensive. The fire was brought under control at 1535.
